Redemption comes to us in many ways. In my case, it came to me in the form of a cat.
I am primarily a cat person in spite of my best attempts to be a dog person too. I love dogs, have been ‘the human’ for some, but it’s cats that have always been present throughout my life.
We are like heavy duty magnets that end up clicking together no matter how hard you try to keep them apart.
So in some ways, maybe it’s not surprising that a cat provided me with redemption.
This particular cat is BB who joined our family in 2014. He, along with his mother and siblings, had been dumped in the country and rescued by a friend. I already had 5 cats I rescued–or vice versa–but took him in when asked to do so.
He was a tiny fluff of black who scared easily. Completely and utterly adorable–and covered in fleas of course.
I took to calling him Baby which eventually turned into his given name of BB.
Like most kittens, he was playful and cuddly. He got along well with the other cats, 2 females and 3 males.
He was delightful even when climbing and roosting in my pre-lit Christmas tree, over and over and over again. Needless to say, this was the last year I had a full-size tree.
BB ate well and grew into a beautiful and sleek black cat with longish fur.
In spite of my attempts to soothe him, BB continued to startle easily and would run off at the first sign of anything he perceived to be dangerous.
As with most cats, getting into a carrier and going to the vet was the epitome of danger.
On the day he was scheduled to be neutered, he ran off and was gone.
I had failed him and in doing so had failed myself.
But this is not the end of our story yet.
Thank you kindly for your time and interest. I hope you are doing well and send many blessings your way.
